SCENE 1: On the High Seas
With Conrad at the helm, the corsairs are sailing across the high seas searching for treasure, when they spot a merchant ship from the Kingdom of Margentos. The corsairs attack the ship, and it surrenders. The captain of the ship tries to bargain for his life but Conrad, finding slave trade repulsive, executes him. Despite Birbanto the quartermaster’s dissent, Conrad liberates the abductees from their shackles. Ali and the other captives join the brotherhood of corsairs. With a bigger and stronger crew, Conrad and the corsairs set their sail again.
SCENE
II: Isle of Floriana
On
the way back to their hideaway, the corsairs discover a small island named
Floriana and drop their anchor on its shore. It’s a peaceful isle where the
islanders are celebrating harvest. The corsairs join them in merrymaking. Among
the cordial islanders, a girl named Medora captures Conrad’s heart. Meanwhile,
the royal procession from Margentos, including the King, Prince Lanquedem, and
the High Priestess Gulnare, disembarks. At the King’s behest, Gulnare gives her
blessing on the isle. When Gulnare unveils herself, Medora is spellbound by her
grace. Now that the blessing has been bestowed, the King demands that the
islanders submit to Margentos and give their valuables as an offering. With
nothing to tender, Medora and her friends offer a dance to express their
gratitude. However, the King ignores their gesture and orders soldiers to bring
them to Margentos. Once again, Conrad ignores Birbanto’s objection and brings
the corsairs together to rescue Medora.
SCENE
III: The Kingdom of Margentos
The
King, his courtiers, Medora, and her friends arrive in front of the Kingdom’s
temple. At the temple’s gate, there are many who are in need but Gulnare is the
only charitable soul. The corsairs watch from a distance and then disguise
themselves as paupers to sneak into the temple. Once inside the temple, the
King commands Medora and her friends to join the priestesses in performing the
ritual of rain. As the priestesses dance, the sacred spring becomes more
plentiful and flowers bloom.
When
the ritual is over, paupers enter the temple to drink from the sacred spring.
Recognizing the corsairs among the poor, Gulnare creates a diversion with
Medora. However, Prince Lanquedem notices the commotion and tries to stop the
corsairs. Conrad’s sword meets Prince Lanquedem’s and the combat ends with
Prince Lanquedem’s mortal injury. Amid chaos, the corsairs escape with Medora,
but Birbanto is arrested while coveting the temple’s treasures.
SCENE
I: Birbanto’s Betrayal
To
avoid execution, Birbanto betrays the corsairs and pledges to the King that he
would avenge the death of Prince Lanquedem. Gulnare secretly boards Birbanto’s
ship to alert the corsairs of the peril that awaits them.
SCENE
II: Draconovo the Pirate Island
The
corsairs arrive at their island. They are in grief, believing that Birbanto is
dead. But life goes on; they hold a feast to commemorate their safe return.
Meanwhile, Birbanto infiltrates the corsairs’ hideaway. Gulnare finds Ali and
forewarns him of Birbanto's betrayal. Unaware of Birbanto’s machinations,
Medora and Conrad whisper sweet love in each other’s ears. When the lovers fall
asleep, Birbanto creeps in and tries to kill Conrad. Just then, Ali comes to
his rescue with the corsairs. Conrad and the corsairs battle against the forces
of Margentos and Birbanto, who used to be one of their own. Conrad tries to
make peace with Birbanto but fails--now he has no choice but to kill Birbanto.
SCENE
III: Off to New Adventures
Taking
no notice of Conrad’s heavy heart, the dawn breaks without fail. But Medora,
Ali, and Gulnare are by his side. Now, it’s time for the corsairs to set sail
again for new adventures.
