KNB has introduced “Ballet for Wednesday,” a new Culture Day initiative designed to make ballet more accessible while enhancing the public’s appreciation of each production. The program includes “Wednesday Ballet Salon,” featuring performance screenings and artist talks, alongside “Wednesday Ballet Collection,” which presents “Full-Length Ballet with Commentary” and “Special Gala.”
The first “Wednesday Ballet Salon” took place on June 24 at the National Arts Companies' Rehearsal Studio in Seoul Arts Center.
Taking place in the rehearsal studio where dancers spend countless hours preparing for the stage, the event offered an intimate atmosphere that encouraged meaningful interaction between artists and audiences that would be difficult to find in a theater.
Interest was overwhelming from the moment registration opened. All available spots were filled in less than a minute, reflecting the remarkable level of interest in the inaugural program.
The event began with a screening of a KNB performance before joining a discussion about the production and the creative work behind the scenes. Hosted by JoongAng Ilbo journalist and author of “Finding Your Balance in Life on Pointe” Jeon Sujin, the talk featured Principal Dancers Park Seulki and Heo Seomyeong, who spoke openly about performance preparation, character interpretation, and their experiences as professional dancers that audiences rarely have the chance to hear.
An interactive Q&A session gave audiences the chance to speak directly with the artists. The combination of performance commentary and personal stories allowed audiences to appreciate ballet from a fresh perspective while gaining a richer understanding of the creative process.
With the successful launch of “Wednesday Ballet Salon” thanks to the enthusiastic support and participation of audiences, KNB will continue to introduce a wide range of productions and interesting stories behind them through “Ballet for Wednesday,” sharing meaningful cultural experiences that bring audiences closer to the world of ballet.
